We all have discrepancies between the person we present to society and our true identity. My work explores this division. A padded cell, to hide what is too abnormal and insane to be in open view and inside, a flock of migrating geese incarnating the desire to live and escape our custom cages , to really be ourselves. I try to reflect these duelling elements in the techniques used. I upholstered the padded or “safe” room with smooth commercial fabric, a fabric that is mass produced, controlled and flawless; a reflection of the role we play in society. I used embroidery for its liberating almost meditative execution; an escape from my own daily stresses like the birds represent escape from our constructed selves.
